These are the oldest beads we have here at A Grain of Sand!  We've been told that these Egyptian Glass beads are 500+ years old. That's pretty exciting bead news. The average size of these wonderful old beads is 4-5mm but there are some a tad smaller and a tad larger.  You get a full 26 " strand  of these Egyptian Glass beads, which may be a bit longer than that.  These beautifully rustic trade beads are called Djenne beads or "Dug" beads. These very old beads have been excavated from the ancient city of Djenne which is the oldest city in Mali, West Africa.  The beads are made of clay and glass and the color ranges from beige to grey to blue, with a few other colors interspersed.  Obviously, no two beads or strands are alike.  The photo is spot on for the variation in colors that you will get. We love these very old, and a tad expensive, Djenne beads.  Sure think you will too.
