Our Story
Every Great Journey Begins with a Grain of Sand
In 1998, I founded A Grain of Sand with a simple dream and a deep love for creating jewelry.
My passion began with pearls. I spent countless hours designing and handcrafting pearl jewelry, fascinated by their beauty and timeless elegance. As I thought about what to name my new business, I kept coming back to the remarkable way a pearl begins—with nothing more than a tiny grain of sand. It seemed like the perfect reminder that even the smallest beginning can become something extraordinary. And so, A Grain of Sand was born.
As my love for jewelry making grew, so did my curiosity. Before long, I wasn't just creating jewelry—I was searching for beautiful gemstones, unusual beads, vintage treasures, and exceptional materials that inspired creativity. What began as a jewelry business naturally evolved into a trusted source for artists, designers, collectors, and crystal enthusiasts around the world.
In those early years, I spent much of my life traveling to bead and jewelry shows across the country. Those weekends became some of my fondest memories. More than selling beads, they were about building friendships, sharing knowledge, and becoming part of an incredible creative community.
One of the greatest blessings during those years was having my mom and dad by my side. They traveled with me from show to show, helping customers, packing displays, and welcoming visitors with warm smiles. Many longtime customers still remember meeting them at our booth. Although they're no longer with me, they remain a treasured part of A Grain of Sand's story, and I'm grateful for every mile we traveled together.
As the years passed, I had the opportunity to acquire remarkable collections that most people never had the chance to see. One of the most memorable became known as the Vintage Bead Hoard—an extraordinary collection of authentic vintage beads and components that had been carefully preserved for decades. This collection was even featured in Bead & Button Magazine in 2012, where I wrote about its discovery and origins from a Manhattan-based company that operated from the 1930s through the 1980s. Sharing those discoveries with collectors became one of the defining moments in the history of A Grain of Sand.
My passion also expanded beyond beads into natural crystals, rare minerals, gemstone cabochons, museum-quality carvings, and one-of-a-kind collector pieces. Today, A Grain of Sand is proud to offer carefully selected treasures from around the world, always with a commitment to authenticity, quality, and personal service.
But perhaps the most exciting chapter is the one we're entering now.
Over nearly three decades, I've gathered far more than inventory. I've built a collection of remarkable pieces—vintage beads, authentic Bakelite, crystals, minerals, and unique finds that were simply too special to let go of at the time. Many have been carefully packed away on shelves, in cabinets, and in boxes, waiting for the right moment.
That moment has arrived.
Today, I'm opening The Vault.
The Vault isn't just another collection. It's the gradual unveiling of treasures that have been quietly waiting behind the scenes for years—sometimes decades. Every Vault Drop reveals another piece of A Grain of Sand's history, and there is still so much waiting to be uncovered and shared.
A Grain of Sand has never been about selling as much as possible. It's always been about sharing remarkable things with people who will truly appreciate them. That philosophy has guided every decision I've made since 1998, and it continues to shape where we're headed.
As the business continues to grow, I'm also excited to share another part of my journey from our North Carolina farm. It's a place where new dreams are taking shape, and where the same appreciation for nature, craftsmanship, and discovery continues to inspire what comes next.
Whether you've been with me since the bead show days or you've only recently discovered A Grain of Sand, thank you for being part of this journey.
There are still countless stories to tell, treasures to uncover, and exciting new chapters ahead. I hope you'll continue the adventure with me.
With gratitude,
