Types of Coral:
Coral is organic because it is naturally created by small marine animals, also referred to as polyps, in the deep and shallow waters of the ocean. However, over time it has acquired certain gemstone characteristics and is used widely in the jewelry making world.
There are two categories of coral:
Coral Reef & precious corals. Coral Reef corals are protected for endangerment. Precious corals are the type used in the jewelry making industry. Precious corals are durable and naturally beautiful.
Red Coral – Also known as Oxblood is found in the deep waters of the Mediterranean.
Momo Coral – Found in Japan with a beautiful consistent rich orange color.
Bamboo Coral or Sea Coral – Is found in China and is dyed to imitate fine coral. Dyed coral is beautiful too. But it’s nice to know that if the price is low, it must be bamboo coral. Sadinia Coral – A rich orange coral found in the waters off of Italy.
Angel Skin Coral – A beautiful pink coral found in Japan.
White Coral – A very popular color indeed.
Black coral – A very soft coral that is porous and often lacquered.
Coral Care:
Be gentle as you can because coral is very soft. Clean by wiping it with a moist soft cloth. Do not expose coral to chemicals such as perfumes or hairspray. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight and store in a cool place when not enjoying it.
Fun Facts about Coral:
*When unworked, coral is quite dull, but after it has been polished it has a beautiful luster. It usually gets carved into beads or cabochons, but some prefer it to be left in its natural branch-like form and just polished.
